These controls are to provide alternative means of accessing the information on this page. Two main facilities are provided: adjusting the text size and listening to the text on the page.
1) Adjusting Text Size:

2) Listening to the Text

As with a few others of the men listed on the Widecombe Roll of Honour, it has not been possible to trace the service history of George Ford. Some unsubstantiated evidence exists to indicate George served in the 1st Battalion the Devonshire Regiment during the relief of Ladysmith in the Boer War.
Additional anecdotal information confirms he served in the Great War, lived at Venton between 1922 and 1928 and between 1935 and 1940. Photographs taken by Beatrice Chase show George Ford working as a road mender with other local men in the 1920’s.
It is known that George Ford served in the Widecombe Home Guard during the Second World War with the rank of Sergeant. (Rank given in the Home Guard was initially based on Rank achieved during service in the Great War). Evidence shows him with the Widecombe Home Guard in Autumn 1944.
Because of the lack of data relating to his date and place of birth it has not proved possible to find out much more about George’s life in the Widecombe area.
